Beltre homers twice, Rangers beat Athletics 12-4

Russell Martin homered twice and drove in four runs as Toronto beat New York to open a four-game series at Yankee Stadium between the AL East front-runners.

Colby Lewis took a flawless game into the eighth inning before settling for a two-hitter, leading the Texas Rangers past the Oakland Athletics 4-0 Friday night.

Danny Valencia had a two-run triple for Oakland. Despite the defeat, the Rangers remained 1 1/2 games behind first-place Houston in the AL West and a game ahead of Minnesota in the race for the second wild card.

Oakland had been shut out for 16 consecutive innings before Canha connected off Yovani Gallardo (12-10) for his 15th homer of the season. In his first start since throwing a complete game September 4 at Kansas City, Danks only surrendered solo homers to Jake Smolinski in the third, Brett Lawrie in the fourth and Josh Reddick in the seventh.

Mark Canha went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in Saturday’s win over the Rangers.

Lewis got a standing ovation from the home crowd after Valencia’s line drive near the line in left field. He was recalled Friday for his third stint with the Rangers this season.

RANGERS EIGHTH: Rougned Odor came back from a 0-2 count to hit a three-run homer. Faulkner had allowed only one hit in three scoreless innings.

Robertson walked Coco Crisp to bring in a run, and after striking out Smolinski, allowed Sam Fuld’s two-run single and then threw a passed ball to bring in Crisp to even the game and get Gray off the hook. Against one of the hotter teams in baseball, Nolin retained his composure and effectively pitched out of jams; he tossed 96 pitches on the night, building up from 85 in his previous outing.

Diamondbacks 12, Dodgers 4 – Welington Castillo, Paul Goldschmidt and Nick Ahmed homered for host Arizona, which cruised to victory over Los Angeles. Since being reacquired by Texas on August 7, he has hit.286 with three homers in 41 at-bats. The Diamondbacks won for the third time in four games, with four pitchers combining to hold the Dodgers to four hits. He had eight outs on balls in the air, but none was squarely hit…. They’d struggled against lefties recently, but got 7 runs off Doubront, making a clear statement.

The Cincinnati-St Louis game was suspended in the eighth inning because of rain with the score tied 2-2.

The teams will play a traditional doubleheader Sunday starting at 1:10 p.m.
