Elizabeth Banks in talks to helm new ‘Charlie’s Angels’ movie

Based on the hit 1970s TV series that originally starred Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith, Charlie’s Angels first headed to the big screen in 2000.

THR reports that Banks and her husband and producing partner Max Handelman will produce. Tanya Roberts also joined the cast in later seasons as ratings were declining.

Wow! We think the actress’ wit and intelligence could go a long way for this movie – the franchise definitely needs a fresh outlook! In retrospect, some might wonder why we didn’t see a third movie starring the trio of Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore – but that can potentially be explained by the fact that the sequel got much poorer reviews than the first, and cost almost $30 million more for what wound up being a smaller box office result. (Bill Murray played Bosley.) The film was followed by a bloated and not well-received sequel, 2003’s Charlie’s Angles: Full Throttle, that effectively killed the movie franchise.

Released by Universal Pictures earlier this year, Pitch flawless 2 marked Banks’ feature film directorial debut. Now Banks is moving forward to her next feature directing gig, and it’s a revival of a name that everyone recognizes. A Charlie’s Angel reboot is a flawless example of this trend; after all, a new film would be a reboot of a reboot. She’s also attached to direct Universal’s film adaptation of Victoria Aveyard’s YA fantasy tale Red Queen.
