“Canadians have been paying far too much to fly to Europe for far too long and today, as we have throughout our history, we’re going to fix that”, said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice President, Commercial. Introductory base fares plus taxes will range from C$199 ($150) to C$299 as the Calgary-based carrier attempts to lure passengers with low transatlantic fares.

Direct flights to London, England from six Canadian cities will be added to WestJet’s itinerary in 2016, for as low as $299.

The new services are made possible by WestJet’s recent acquisition of four new Boeing 767-300 aircraft that allow the airline to expand its offerings to include long-distance flights.

The approximately eight-hour flight will depart Winnipeg daily at 9 p.m. Connecticut and arrive at 11 a.m. the following day.

Stewart Wingate, CEO of Gatwick Airport commented: ‘Gatwick is a competitive and innovative airport that can respond quickly to the changing way people are choosing to fly.

The airliner is also launching the new London service this spring in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg and St. John’s, N.L.

WestJet’s non-stop flights from Canada to London all operate as overnight flights leaving late afternoon or evening, which is ideal for travellers connecting to all six airports from other regions in Canada. Both routes are operated by Boeing Next-Generation 737-700 aircraft.

The airline is looking to compete with British Airways, Air Canada, and Air Transat, and the increase in competition could serve to drive prices down across the board, which could be a massive win for you attractive travellers.
