No one other than the injured sergeant, who has been on the force since 1987, was involved in the incident, Procopio said. The trooper was hit by buckshot, a type of shell that breaks apart and releases pellets.
He is being treated at UMass Medical Center in Worcester.
In a statement, a state police spokesman said “The investigation into the exact facts and circumstances of the discharge, and compliance with department weapons policy is ongoing”. He is assigned to Troop H in South Boston.
The trooper, a sergeant who has not been named, suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his leg, police said.
