An escape artist who participated in a “death-defying” stunt in front of an audience in New Brunswick on Tuesday was hospitalized after he apparently nearly drowned.

Las Vegas resident Spencer Horsman, who bills himself as a “Comedy Magician and Escape Artist”, was placed inside a 30-inch Plexiglas tank filled with 100 gallons of water that was blocked with locked bars across the tank. The magician must pick a series of locks in order to escape from the glass cube, a task Horsman couldn’t complete. He lost consciousness and had to be freed by Angel and several stagehands.

For the trick, Angel’s associate stepped into a glass box filled with water and allowed himself to be tied up with chains that had 16 locks on them.

His condition is unknown, but a NewBrunswickToday.com reporter on the scene said Horsman was responsive. He was then transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Witnesses said Horsman was conscious as he was taken away as a precaution to nearby Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. “Spencer was held for evaluation and tests, and should be released from the hospital later this evening (Tuesday)”.

It wasn’t the first time the stunt went wrong.

The incident was similar to one earlier this year when Angel and Horsman were rehearsing for opening night of the illusionist’s show at Foxwoods Resort Casino. “Horsman is expected to make a full recovery”.

“I am sorry that the outcome was not as planned”.

In front of the State Theatre in New Brunswick, New Jersey, a crowd watched as Spencer was locked in what is called the water torture cell. “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers”, Angel said in a statement released by the theater, according to the Asbury Park Press. Whether “Submerged” will be a part of the show will be at Horsman’s discretion.
