Jordan Spieth struggles Friday at TPC Boston

The 2010 champion posted a 12-under 130 total at TPC Boston, good for a three-stroke lead over Brendon de Jonge of Zimbabwe with half the field back in the clubhouse.

He has gone 61 consecutive holes without being under par. “I felt like my game was okay but the scoring wasn’t”. It’s easy to watch Day now and say he’s the best player, but McIlroy and Spieth have been more consistent. “And, I tend to make a few more putts than average for me out here on these greens, which is nice”.

Fowler’s fellow Americans Colt Knost, Kevin Chappell, Harris English and Charley Hoffman were also four under, along with Australian Matt Jones.

Luke Donald took a big step toward advancing to the next FedEx Cup playoff event at his home course in Chicago.

Jordan Spieth shot a 73 at the Deutsche Bank Championship to follow his 75 in the first round and, for the first time in his career, he missed consecutive cuts.

This was the second straight missed cut for Spieth and fourth straight round over par.

Quickly climbing the ranks to even surpass Rory McIlroy as the number one player in the world this past August.

Poulter produced a flawless round featuring four birdies, including one at the 18th.

Speaking after his 63 Saturday (via Michael Whitmer of the Boston Globe), Hoffman was quick to avoid drawing parallels between the two rounds because there’s still work to do this time.

For those who were pumped to see Jordan Spieth the next two days at the Deutsche Bank Championship, you’ll have to wait until next year. “I came from a decent ways back, so I didn’t have to deal with the lead”. Any time you’re in the lead, you’ve got a little added pressure on yourself. “The first two days I’m obviously in a pretty good position but we’ve got a lot of golf left”.

De Jonge, who has struggled with his game all season, recording just three top tens, with none since a tied fifth finish at the Houston Open in April was just as surprised as anyone at a round that included seven birdies and one bogey.

Phil Mickelson, in dire need of a big week to bolster any chance of being picked for the Presidents Cup, had a pair of three-putt bogeys and shot 70.

“I had a good chat with Dave Stockton last night”, McIlroy said. “When I’ve given myself opportunities to get it close, then I’m not making putts”.

Day said Spieth’s problems appear to be more mental than physical.

“I just haven’t had that trust and commitment that I’ve had”, he said.

“I had really bad self-talk this week, something I haven’t experienced in quite a while”.
