Motuapuaka, a 6-foot-0, 231-pound sophomore from Virginia Beach, suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee Saturday in the third quarter of Tech’s 42-3 win against Furman.

There were encouraging signs from Motley against Football Championship Subdivision opponent Furman, in which he completed 16-of-24 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns, including 9-of-10 passes in the third quarter.
The Hokies (0-1) not only lost to No. 1 Ohio State on Monday night, but they lost quarterback Michael Brewer with a broken left collarbone.
The Paladins, who scored 35 points and had 525 yards of offense in their season-opening loss to Coastal Carolina, finished with just 254 yards with three turnovers against the Hokies. Beamer said McKenzie will play, and the Hokies would love to build some confidence in the running game as they head into contests with Purdue and East Carolina.

“As the game goes on, you do get a little more comfortable”, Motley said. He ended up taking a medical redshirt and his coaches now say he is better than ever. He’s smart. “With the short week, we had to do a bit more game planning than usual”, Motley said.
“It was a draw play that we ran earlier in the game and we went right up the middle but this time they were prepared for it so I had to do something different”. He made a great first throw that I thought was really good for a young guy. He’s also connected from 51 and 50 yards.
As happy as he was with Motley’s first begin, together with performances by a number of of Tech’s younger offensive gamers within the win towards Furman, Frank Beamer is aware of there are potential pitfalls on the street that do not exist at residence.

“Going on the road is always a big deal”, said Beamer, whose team posted 583 yards against Furman – the most in Tech’s three seasons under offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler.
