Google Glass reportedly now called ‘Project Aura’

Now, Google is hiring former Amazon engineers and developers to work on Project Aura, its new wearable tech initiative.

According to the report, Project Aura will remain within Google as opposed to being spun off into the new Alphabet company or folded into the Nest business.

The consumer division of Glass was not dead, however, and only a month later the division was handed off to Tony Fadell, the founder and CEO of Nest, who is heading the revamped Google Glass project’s new design team.

That is the fate of Google Glass, the beleaguered wearable computing headgear the Internet giant tested, then shelved and is now planning to relaunch under new leadership and in a new form.

Business Insider told the reasons why Google Glass was not received well in the market. Google has stopped selling it.

As for the future of Glass itself, that remains to be seen – but Google appears committed to future experiments in the area, even if a real-world product release remains distant. All joined Google over the summer, and additional hires are expected. It is not yet determined if Project Aura will integrate virtual reality like the Cardboard and Facebook’s Oculus. Aside from reviving the Google Glass headgear, the team is also tasked to develop other wearable technology.

Among them is Dmitry Svetlov, a software development manager from Lab 126 and is now working with the Project Aura team.

Meanwhile Amazon has said it will lay off dozens of its own engineers, after the failure of its Fire phone and dulling interest in its higher-end tablets.

We assume the name change from Google Glass is to get rid of the dirty G word from the project so that it can properly become part of Alphabet.
