First Manned Orion Mission In 2023, Says NASA

Performance data has helped to improve manufacturing processes, as well.

NASA intends to first test an Orion capsule in a lunar orbit, then use it for a mission to rendezvous with a boulder that has been robotically plucked from the surface of an asteroid and positioned into an distant orbit around the moon.

Bill Gerstenmaier, the associate administrator for human exploration at NASA, said the Orion team made some structural changes to the spacecraft, which was another factor in the delay.

NASA had been aiming for the first crew test flight of Orion in August 2021. The positive review means that Orion has passed Key Decision Point C.

The agency is expected to disclose its commitment to launch an Orion crew by a certain time and within a certain budget, determined with at least 70 percent confidence of success.

The delay was attributed to a “rigorous technical and programmatic review,” which mentioned that NASA is keeping the project in line with current “funding levels in the president’s budget request.” After reviewing the spacecraft’s technical components, officials gave the capsule a go-ahead for a manned test no later than 2023.

NASA plans to spend $6.seventy seven billion between October and April 2023 for 2 of the brand new Orion capsules, that are at the moment beneath growth by lead contractor Lockheed Martin Corp.

Lightfoot also adds, “As we take these steps to develop the capabilities we need to send astronauts deep into space, we’re also aligning how we manage our human exploration systems development programs to ensure we are prepared for unforeseen future hurdles”.

“We are progressing toward eventually sending astronauts deep into space”, he said in a NASA statement. “Ultimately, we’d like to get where we’re flying these missions about once per year”. Through the critical design review (CDR), NASA will be able to demonstrate that the spacecraft is indeed ready for full-scale fabrication, assembly, integration and testing. The capsule will blast off atop a megarocket still under development by NASA, called SLS (S-L-S) for Space Launch System.

“We’re really trying to build a program”, William Gerstenmaier, NASA associate administrator for human exploration and operations, told the Associated Press.

Previously, a test flight of Orion with humans aboard had been scheduled for 2021, but now they identified a number of hardware and software problems that could disrupt the set timeline, reports BBC.
