Obama says House vote on Iran deal shows growing support for deal

The congressman echoed Speaker John Boehner’s remarks that House Republicans will use all the tools at their disposal to prevent the deal from going through.

Among area lawmakers, Republicans Mike Turner of Dayton, Jim Jordan of Urbana, Steve Chabot of Cincinnati, and Brad Wenstrup of Cincinnati opposed the deal while Democrat Joyce Beatty of Columbus supported it.

The House held three votes on the Iran deal Thursday and Friday.

“It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to tell India how to work their way through this, but we do believe that the architecture of the Iran deal is truly an international architecture”, Kirby said.

It wouldn’t be the first time Republicans have sought to stop the White House in the courts. Every Republican voted against it, along with 25 members of President Barack Obama’s own party. The bill was introduced by Mr. Zeldin and Peter Roksam of Illinois on Wednesday night, and will be voted on in the House on Friday.

If such a resolution were to pass, and survive Obama’s promised veto, it would bar the president from waiving many US sanctions on Tehran, a key component of the nuclear deal.

Obama hailed the vote as “a victory for diplomacy, for American national security, and for the safety and security of the world“.

Under the accord struck between Iran and six world powers – the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China – Teheran would curtail its nuclear programme in exchange for relief from crippling economic sanctions.

“The US president, fruitlessly, tries to claim the results of the nuclear negotiations, but the truth is … the US had no alternative but giving up its excessive demands”, Afkham said.

“It is United States law that Congress will receive the entire agreement, and it is specified in that law that the agreement includes the side deals”.

President Obama and most congressional Democrats have backed the pact, arguing that while not flawless, the agreement is the best hope for stalling Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Rep. Dennis Ross also voted against the Iran deal. After backtracking on plans to vote on the disapproval resolution when it began to look short of support in the Senate, House Republicans lined up votes on several related measures.

Republicans and Democrats have sharply differing views on the Iran nuclear deal.

I have concluded that this agreement is more likely to prevent Iran form acquiring a nuclear weapon than the plausible alternatives”, Bennet said in a statement last week.
