Phoenix officer shot, wounded during traffic stop; authorities hunt for gunmen

A veteran Arizona police officer is expected to survive after he was shot multiple times while making a traffic stop Wednesday morning.

The officer was conducting a traffic stop around 2:45 a.m. near 12th Street and Campbell Avenue when the incident occurred, according to KNXV-TV.

The officer was hospitalized in serious condition.

Authorities are hunting for the suspects, whose flashy car was found abandoned nearby a short time later. Details on his injuries were not released immediately.

Howard says the car’s driver is believed to be the shooter. “One of the suspects is described as a heavy set white man that may be armed with a rifle”.

The cop was injured as Phoenix-area residents were left on edge by a string of freeway shootings over the last three weeks.
