Mason ends Spurs’ wait for victory, Sunderland still winless

It is rare to hear both the winning and losing managers sound so upbeat.

It kicks-off at 12.30pm on Sky Sports 1, where Tottenham Hotspur travel to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland.

Sunderland has reinforcements, however, most notably from Liverpool as Fabio Borini starts for the first time since rejoining the club on a permanent transfer from the Reds.

In a season where Sunderland need to get the wins rolling to ensure survival, a fixture against Tottenham could put three points on hold for the Black Cats.

“They make you train at different times from the first team, so I was actually not seeing them – not because of my behaviour, or because I had said something or done something wrong”.

With Leicester unbeaten in their last nine Premier League games, it is Mourinho’s Chelsea who are currently in danger of slipping into the bottom three.

It did not look like the Defoe of Tottenham. Pocettino’s side are perhaps the fittest in the top flight and have developed a habit of grinding teams down and capitalising on their exhaustion late on. He is a good player for us’.

It was Lamela who had a decisive input into the goal. Mason was able to poke the ball past Pantilimon for the lead, but it came at a cost: Ryan was injured on the play and was subbed off for Tom Carroll. “The first half was open but we dominated the second so the result was fair”.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is confident England striker Harry Kane will rediscover his touch in front of goal after another blank afternoon.

When Son started to play in Germany for Hamburg, he played as a No 9, as a striker.

“We knew if we kept a clean sheet and kept a solid back four and defended well that the goal would come eventually, and I’m happy it did”. Now the mentality is a collective one.

“Of course, after that everyone has individual targets, but first it’s the interests of the team and for that, we are very happy”.

Sunderland have hit rock bottom again after their latest defeat. But at least they tested Spurs, worried them and gave their supporters something to cheer.

Gomez said: “I think we will only get better by the game and as the weeks go on”. We were a bit unlucky. “We deserved more than nothing”. “We are very pleased with our performance”. The pass from Jeremain Lens to Jermain Defoe (when his shot was saved) would have given us a lift as well had that gone in. Tottenham have a really good side.
