He has 30 days to appeal to the Swiss Federal Criminal Court against the ruling on his extradition to the US.

She said: “Separate and apart from the pending indictment our investigation has expanded since May”. Lynch, speaking at the same news conference as Lauber, said new charges and arrests against “individuals and entities” were anticipated. Mr Figueredo is a former vice-president of the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) and was a vice-president of Fifa. Also arrested that day was Eduardo Li, a Federation Internationale de Football Association executive committee member from Costa Rica. Four more men had guilty pleas unsealed.

Switzerland is expected to rule on the remaining five extradition requests by the end of the month.
