Evacuation orders in certain areas have been lifted for RESIDENTS ONLY; however these areas continue to remain under an evacuation advisory. “We are cooperating fully with Cal Fire in an investigation of whether this could have been a source of ignition for the Butte Fire”.
A 72-year-old woman died in her home as the fast-moving fire ripped through the communities of Middletown and Cobb, and several of other people are still missing. The fire spread later in the week to Amador and Calaveras counties and has burned almost 72,000 acres, according to Cal Fire’s latest update Wednesday morning.
“We have yet to go in and see the devastation”, Kristen Smith said.
Mark McCloud, 67, was found near his home on Baker Riley Road near Mokelumne Hill (Calaveras County). He declined to identify the second victim, saying the family hasn’t been notified.
Property losses from the Valley Fire – 585 homes and hundreds more buildings destroyed – stand as the highest among the thousand of wildfires that have raged across the entire drought-stricken western United States this summer. In 1997, the utility was found guilty of 739 counts of negligence for a pattern of tree-trimming violations that led to a devastating 1994 wildfire in the Sierra.
Roseville firefighters have also answered the call for help at the Valley Fire in Napa and Lake counties, which looks to cause even more property loss and displacement: These were the sixth and seventh strike teams the Roseville Fire Department has launched over the course of this “tinder box” season of 2015.
That blaze may have been sparked when a power line belonging to the Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) company hit a tree, the company said. We have provided $2 million in funding to local fire safe councils for fire fuel reduction, emergency access projects and public education.
It took almost 5,000 firefighters to control the wildfire.
