Southampton cements spot in world’s top 100 universities

No Indonesian universities made the top 700 in the research citations sub-ranking, showing that more resources must be invested in developing an global research profile, the statement added.
It even lost ground against its Canadian peers, ranking 13th among this country’s universities, compared to 11th a year ago.
The results were disappointing for the University of Ottawa, which had improved its world ranking by nine spots last year, only to fall back sharply this year.
But Hong Kong institutions are still outside the top 20, which is led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and followed closely by Harvard and the University of Cambridge.
Despite a fall from number 45 last year to number 69 in this year’s QS rankings, the University of Copenhagen can claim the title of the best university in the Nordics.
After the United States , UK, Switzerland and Singapore, the highest entry is claimed by Australia, with the Australian National University (ANU) in joint 19th.
While Stellenbosch University (SU) beat out the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), the University of Cape Town (UCT) has been crowned king of South Africa’s universities in the 2015/16 QS World Rankings.
The University of Tokyo, typically recognized as Asia’s top university, came in at No. 39.
QS looked at 3,539 institutions worldwide and ranked 891.
With the change, research citation in five areas – life sciences and medicine, arts and humanities, engineering and technology, social sciences and management, and natural sciences – are given equal weighting of 20 per cent.
University College Cork is down three places to 233rd, but there were small gains for other universities.
This year’s release sees refinements introduced to the ranking methodology, aiming to improve the way in which research citations are assessed.
“The fascinating thing about these latest results is that they reveal more diversity than ever in the distribution of world-class universities at the highest levels”, says Sowter.

The change is meant to reflect the influence achieved by each university in the research world, relative to the size of its faculty.
