The latest big recall comes from Fiat Chrysler and involves potential air bag issues on more than 1.5 million trucks… In the third recall, 194,000 Ram 2500, 2500 pickup trucks, and 2500 Chassis Cabs to fix a defective weld in the steering system.

So far there have been two related injuries, but no accidents. The vehicle maker said it knows of one “minor accident” stemming from the problem.

An analysis of warranty data linked to steering-wheel wiring harnesses determined that less than 1% of all such repairs involved unintended airbag deployment. FCA says that in some trucks, that harness can come in contact with an airbag retainer spring.

FCA is implementing a two-phase recall. All trucks are from the 2012 through 2014 model years.

Owners are encouraged to visit recalls.mopar.com or vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin to see if their vehicle is affected. Some of the welds for the steering components could separate. It says there could be diminished steering response.

A second mailing will then advise customers to have their dealers install a reinforcement bracket, provided their vehicles were not repaired in the campaign’s first phase. The 2014 Ram 1500, for instance, has been recalled nine times.
