Tesla Motors Inc (NADAQ:TSLA) Asked Moms to Help Design Model X

Tesla designed the Model X with space and safety in mind, two features that women have indicated are important to them. When in 2012 the Model S hit the market, women made up just about 13 percent of the electric sedan’s US customers.

But as safety records improved, and the Tesla brand name gained acceptance, more and more women became comfortable in making the shift to the electric vehicle.

In the year 2013, only 17.8 percent females bought the Model S sedan but that figure rose to around 21.5 percent in 2014.

Tesla has added a new line to its Model X description, reading “Front trunk with room for luggage, strollers, or two golf bags”, and this was the topic of discussion among users of the Tesla Motors Club forum. Tesla – established as a Silicon Valley automaker that has more in common with the technology industry than the traditional automakers – initially was the panache of tech-savvy early adopters, and as we all know it these are mostly male.

Coming back to female buyers, around 40 percent of them purchase vehicles in the USA , out of which 48 percent of them prefer to buy a small premium SUV and 53 percent look out for a compact SUV, according to J.D. Power & Associates. The participants, most of whom drove minivans and SUVs, were asked what they like and don’t like about their vehicles. Safety was the biggest issue, followed by the availability of a third row. “With the X, I think we probably will be slightly majority female”.

Three-and-a-half years later, the first Model Xs – a limited-edition Founders Series that typically goes to board members and close friends of the company – are to be handed over on September 29 at Tesla’s factory in Fremont, California.

The all-wheel-drive X seats seven passengers, has “falcon wing” doors that open vertically and a 90 kilowatt-hour battery that is expected to have a range of roughly 240 miles (386 kilometers) per charge.

We understand that Tesla had originally counted on replacing the Model X’s door mirrors with video cameras to help smooth its shape, and increase range. But new leaks and info via the online Design Studio for the Model X do give us some hints about the vehicle , suggesting that the Tesla SUV will be more spacious than imagined.

U.S. drivers are to buy more than 17 million new vehicles this year, and their love affair with trucks and SUVs is accelerating.

Moving on to the Tesla Model X, the car’s range has also apparently increased, although there was no incredible feat of endurance required this time around. In August, more than 889,000 light trucks were sold in the USA , compared to 688,000 cars.
