Stephen Colbert’s First ‘Late Show’ nearly Never Made it to Air

The Colbert Nation isn’t sure how to react to this new hybrid Stephen.

By the time the edited episode was ready to be sent over to CBS, technical glitches kept “Late Show” producers from digitally delivering the show to the network.

While stuffing his face with cookies on the September 8 show, Colbert made light of everything from Trump’s comments about building a wall between the US and Mexico to his appearance.

It would seem that Fallon’s coupling of megastars Justin Timberlake and Ellen DeGeneres was a better draw than Colbert’s guests, Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk and movie actress Scarlett Johansson. Later, he showed his wife and kids in the audience. He saved it by jamming out with the show’s band, Jon Batiste and Stay Human, along with Ben Folds, Mavis Staples and others to “Everyday People” by Sly and the Family Stone.

Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, bolstered by a visit from the comedian’s pal and frequent viral video partner Justin Timberlake, jumped in key demo of adults 18-49 – easily topping Colbert in Local People Meters.

And Colbert had CBS chief Les Moonves sitting in the front row, pretending to be ready to switch over to reruns of “The Mentalist“.

Clooney even said he has no movie to promote. Nielsen Social Guide reported that it was “the most social entertainment show” on TV on Tuesday and streams of the full episode are up triple-digits compared to past year to date. Colbert slipped in and out of character over those nine years, so the transition shouldn’t be too jarring to regular viewers. He greeted the crowd with the familiar, “Hello, Nation” refrain, and the crowd chanted, familiarly, “Stephen, Stephen”. The show was a little long. She appeared a second time on the Colbert Report in 2014. If you don’t count predecessor David Letterman’s final week before he said goodbye in May, those numbers were the biggest audience the show has received since July 1995.
