The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for August decreased 0.3 percent to 4.5 percent.
The River Region continued to boast some of the lowest jobless rates in the state. July saw the unemployment rate at 4.8 percent.
Alabama’s jobless rate held steady at 6.2 percent in August, according to preliminary numbers released Friday by the state.
But total nonfarm employment in Hampton Roads declined slightly – to 758,400 from 760,600 in July – the Virginia Employment Commission announced today.
There was an increase of 6,700 non-farm jobs from July to August, with the largest increases occurring in leisure/hospitality, government and trade/transportation/utilities jobs.

The U.S. Labor Department says weekly applications for unemployment aid dropped 11,000 to a seasonally adjusted 264,000. That marks 36 months of year-over-year job growth for the state. Over-the-year August job gains were recorded by both the private sector, which grew by 37,200 jobs, and the public sector, which grew by 3,900 jobs. By contrast, Virginia lost 3,000 jobs in July. The number in August 2014 was 8.5 percent.
