The other people arrested are all thought to be prison guards, bringing the total number of people arrested in connection with the escape to 20.

But a source close to the Prosecutor’s Office claimed Mexico’s ex-head of federal prisons and the ex-directors of Altiplano were among those held.

After his escape in July, Guzman took to Twitter to taunt the police and insult Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Both Oseguera and Cardenas were removed from their positions shortly after Guzman escaped.

Six days after the escape, seven prison workers were charged and four officials, including two members of Centro de Investigación y Seguridad Nacional, CISEN, Mexico’s intelligence agency, were charged for their alleged roles in the jailbreak. His Jul. disappearance from Altiplano jail & revelations by an investigative reporter have left a path of accusations of collusion within the escape of the human being nicknamed “Shorty” for his stature.

The local authorities are now checking whether the notorious drug lord managed to flee Mexico.

The office of Mexico’s attorney general confirmed the 13 new arrests on Friday, but did not reveal the identity of the suspects.

Guzman, sometimes branded as the world’s biggest drug lord and who is also wanted in the United States, made a well-planned, elaborate escape on July 11.

The Sinaloa Cartel is blamed for most of Mexico’s trafficking of heroin, cocaine, and marijuana to the US.
