Scherzer’s shout, Lobaton’s fly in 10th send Nats over Miami
The Miami Marlins are looking for momentum to carry into the offseason and they gained some on Friday getting the win.

But the Nationals have cost themselves on the bases this week, though perhaps neither time did it directly lead to a loss.
The Washington Nationals look to bounce back from a crushing loss to the Miami Marlins when the two teams resume their four-game series at Nationals Park in the nation’s capital. Then, after allowing a single to Zimmermann, Hand lost any semblance of control, walking two batters to load the bases for Harper, whose deep sinking liner closed a 10-pitch at-bat and made it 2-all. The fly ball hit by Lobaton sent outfielder Jayson Werth home to score and secure the victory. These days, Bour’s father is retired, and the first baseman for the Marlins is putting the hurt on the Nationals, his hometown team.
Harper was originally called out at third, but after a video review that lasted almost five minutes, he was ruled safe.
Martin Prado hit a two-run homer in the first and after a sac fly by Dee Gordon in the fifth, Marlins’ slugger Justin Bour put a charge in a letter-high 2-2 heater and hit a three-run blast over the out-of-town scoreboard in right to put Miami up 6-2. The inning ended when Lobaton threw out Yelich trying to steal second.
“We were [going] on contact”.
When Williams came out, Scherzer made his feelings clear, barking at the manager, “I want it!” Shortstop Miguel Rojas led off the inning with a double before scoring on a sacrifice fly hit by Gordon making it a 3-2 ballgame.
Bour, a former standout at George Mason University, continues to torment the Nationals.
Over the game’s 2nd half, the Phillies were shut out by a trio of Nationals pitchers.
Desmond tied it in the second with his 18th homer of the season, a liner into the visitor’s bullpen.
Total attendance will not reach the 2 million mark for the first time since 2002, the first time in Citizens Bank Park history the club won’t reach that level.
“We battled all night and we didn’t do enough”, said Christian Yelich, whose throw from left almost nabbed Werth at the plate. “The whole place was going bananas and I was like, ‘Holy s–, we did it!’ But until that happened, you don’t realize it. You never get that sense until you actually do it”. “He likes to get 27 outs”.
“I knew that was coming”, Werth said.
Probably the worst part of Scherzer’s slide occurred two starts ago. All season long, young players to aging veterans have said they feed off the ferocity that Scherzer brings into every start.
After giving up a double in the top of the seventh inning, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Max Scherzer saw manager Matt Williams approach the mound and yelled toward him to allow him to finish the inning. He showed how badly he wants to live up to his contract, and how he wants nothing more than to be the ace that Washington is paying him to be.
Sixteen months removed from Tommy John surgery, Fernandez hit 100 miles per hour with a fastball in the first inning and repeatedly hit 99.
Scherzer has not won at home since June 20, when he threw a no-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
