Iowa defeats Pitt with last-second, 57-yard field goal

Narduzzi called timeout to ice Koehn just after he kicked his first attempt, which was well short.

Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi gave detractors of the practice more ammunition – while Iowa’s Marshall Koehn gave the Hawkeyes one of their most thrilling wins in years.

First, there were the two early interceptions by quarterback Nate Peterman.

Koehn turned and sprinted one way up the Kinnick turf and then another way and then he reversed and someone ended up crashing down in the opposite end zone in a pile of black and gold jerseys.

ABOUT PITTSBURGH (2-0): Reigning ACC MVP James Conner, out for the season with a knee injury, ran for 155 yards in the 24-20 loss to the Hawkeyes last season, but redshirt freshman Qadree Ollison has already romped for 288 yards and 7.8 yards per carry this season and wideout Tyler Boyd figures to challenge the Hawkeyes after 10 grabs for 153 yards in 2014. Iowa’s offense came out strong in the second half last week after going in the break trailing Iowa State 17-10. If one of them gets off to a hot start, I expect Narduzzi to stick with them. Peterman – a junior transfer from Tennessee – ended up playing the final three quarters in soggy conditions against Akron last week with solid if not spectacular results.

I think Peterman will get the nod as starter tomorrow night, and I hope he responds positively.

Iowa’s best defensive player returned a week after suffering a dislocated left elbow. Neither Pitt quarterback is a huge running threat (though they aren’t bad; Voytik had over 400 yards previous year on the ground), so I think less “contain” and more “get after him”.

Pittsburgh has apparently found a new quarterback in Nate Peterman.

For the second straight week, the Hawkeyes had a fourth-quarter rally in them.

The Hawkeyes scored again with 44 seconds to go before halftime when Canzeri capped a 12-play, 74-yard drive with a 4-yard run. Pat Narduzzi put together some of the most fearsome defenses in college football while he was a coordinator at Michigan State; are the building blocks in place for him to do the same here?

But Beathard picked up a first down with his legs with two seconds left, giving Iowa a slim chance at a win. Tre Roberson didn’t have any time and couldn’t get anything going. “He’s doing a great job as a head coach as well, but his influence there certainly is showing up on film, and not just scheme”.
