First Scale Model of Solar System Is Mind Blowing

Two amateur filmmakers decided to build a scale model of the solar system to have a better understanding of the actual size of space.

But in reality, the solar system is extremely vast.

The duo said they went onto a dry lake bed in Black Rock desert, Nevada and started building the solar system.

“Every single picture of the solar system that we encounter is not to scale”, Overstreet said. “If you put the orbits to scale on a piece of paper, the planets become microscopic, and you won’t be able to see them”.

As the sky grew dark, Overstreet and company walked lights around the orbits of the inner planets and drove the orbits of the outer ones as Gorosh filmed them from a nearby ridge.

Our cosmic neighborhood is really, really big, so it is hard to include all of the important bodies in a scale model of it, but Hörst thinks it’s a shame they didn’t include Pluto and some other smaller objects, if only for their scientific importance.

A group of friends in Nevada claims they have developed an extraordinary way to show what the size of our solar system is.

Overstreet’s team placed the planets of the solar system at their relative distance from the Sunday .

The film plays like a making-of documentary as Gorosh, Overstreet and three friends set up and shoot an epic, three-hour time-lapse using trails of light to show the orbit of the planets at their true scale and distance. Getting into the farthest reaches of the scaled solar system also required driving in a vehicle for a while. Here’s an wonderful try at displaying how amazingly large and delightful this universe is. The Stockholm Globe Arena was to represent the sun and the planets were lined at a 20 million to one scale.
