SMU quarterback Matt Davis, right, scores a touchdown against TCU during the second half of an NCAA college football game Saturday, September 19, 2015, in Fort Worth, Texas. Through three games, Boykin’s now thrown for 985 yards with a 10/3 TD/INT ratio while rushing for 148 yards and two scores. SMU has dominated time of possession so far, ranking third nationally with an average of 36 minutes, 51 seconds per game.

Doctson had five catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns. Contrasting the two performances will be a good measuring stick for both teams. It won’t be a shutout this year but TCU will win in dominant fashion, emerging unfazed on their quest for a national championship.

What level with TCU’s banged-up defense play to?

In his first career start at Tulsa (Nov. 8), he had 212 yards passing and 181 yards rushing while totaling three TDs (1 pass, 2 rush). The newcomers to the lineup, Ty Summers and Montrel Wilson, are rookies, but safeties Derrick Kindred, Denzel Johnson and Travin Howard play with a linebacker’s mindset. SMU, ever the upstart, is all about its metropolitan, Dallas persona, thus putting the ideologies of the two schools, and their fan bases at odds. Texas Christian is led by quarterback Trevone Boykin, who has 531 passing yards and two touchdowns on the season and would have been even more if he hadn’t given way to his backup during the blowout.

Trevone Boykin was almost picked off on his first two passes of the game before recovering to find Ty Slanina on an out route to pick up a much-needed first down for the Frogs.

Progress, sure. But SMU has a long way to go, particularly on defense. But they’ll try to overcome youth that includes redshirt freshman at Jordan Wyatt and sophomore Jesse Montgomery at the other cornerback. The Horned Frogs mix up a lot of man and zone coverage and make great coverage calls because Patterson thinks like an offense. SMU snapped TCU’s 22-game home winning streak in 2011. Defensive-minded head coach Gary Patterson has a strong history of recruiting speedy offensive players and turning them into defensive playmakers.
