Over the last few decades, chemicals known to harm the ozone layer have been successfully substituted in most parts of the world since 1989 when the Montreal Protocol came into force.

Saying that people must never forget that protection of forest is necessary for sustained survival of human beings on the earth, Joykumar said that global warming has now become a major concern.

In the year of 1980 Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol has discovered the hole to Ozone layer, then it signed with the 24 UN member nations to reducing the Ozone -depleting materials.

He also urged the students, youth and public to carry out mass plantation drives to check depletion of ozone layer and save future generation.

As of 1 January 2015 the production and consumption of key Ozone Depleting Substances (ODSs) like chlorofluorocarbon (CFCs), CTC halons, Methyl Chloroform and Methyl Bromide have already been phased-out globally.

The European Union has implemented the phase-out of ODS use in line with the Montreal Protocol requirements over the period 1987-2010, which is 10 years ahead of the legal provision.

Together, we have succeeded in putting the stratospheric ozone layer on the road to recovery by the middle of this century.

On this day, States were invited to devote the Day to promote activities in accordance with the objectives of the Protocol and its amendments. Ozone layer is protecting the human health and ecosystem by limiting the harmful ultraviolet radiations from reaching the earth. “It shows what we are capable of when nations act together on a global challenge”, he said. However, the UN chief observed that the work of the Montreal Protocol is not yet done even though hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have been used as replacements for many ozone-depleting substances. With a slogan, “Ozone: All there is between you and UV” to mark the both 30 anniversary and world Ozone Day.
