WWII veteran will attend Lake County Honor Flight fundraiser Friday

Mission IX of the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight takes flight Wednesday, September 16 from Delta County Airport. Sponsoring a veteran costs about $550 apiece. It was truly a very emotional experience for the both of us as well as everyone else in the airport.

22 Veterans and their guardians headed to Washington, DC with the Utah Honor Flight to visit military memorials.

The survivors, range in ages from their mid-80’s to early 90’s. Most of the veterans have been World War II veterans.

Among the participants will be Haven Barlow, 93-year-old World War II Navy veteran and the longest-serving Utah legislator. Hundreds show up to say their ‘Thank You’s, which for some veterans, is the first time they have heard those words.

On Thursday the Utah House of Representatives-sponsored Honor Flight departed from Salt Lake City to Washington, D.C. Veterans and guardians received a send-off at the Senate building at the state Capitol.

“It is just so heartwarming to see these veterans come back to their welcome home”, Harris adds.

Westerville’s Honor Flight organizers are hoping to give participating veterans a warm welcome when they return from their tour of Washington, D.C., Saturday, September 19.
