EMMYS 2015: Women in Comedy

Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor paid an emotional tribute to the LGBT community while accepting the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy award.

Tambor plays Maura – formerly Mort – Pfefferman, a transgender character of Amazon’s “Transparent“. “And now I’ve been given the opportunity to act, because people’s lives depend on it”.

But the most important win in comedy was, of course, Jill Soloway, who won Best Director for a Comedy for Transparent.

“Something interesting about my moppa Carrie, she could tomorrow go and try to find an apartment and in 32 states it would be legal for the landlord to look her in the eye and say, ‘We don’t rent to trans people, ‘” says Soloway.

The show won two out of the first three comedy awards, with its writers snagging a trophy and then Tony Hale winning for best supporting actor in a comedy series.

“Thank you for your patience. Thank you for letting us be part of the change”, he concluded his acceptance speech.

Actor-comedian Andy Samberg is hosting the live show, expected to run til about 11 pm ET on Fox.

In ceremonies held before Sunday’s national broadcast, fellow “Transparent” actor Bradley Whitford won an Emmy for his guest appearance in the comedy series, which can be streamed on Amazon.

Andy Samberg hosted the ceremony from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles tonight (September 20).

The Emmy Awards are heaping early praise on the HBO comedy “Veep”.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was honoured as best lead comedy actress for “Veep” for the fourth time.

“Donald Trump is running for president, to the delight of uncles everywhere”, Samberg said.

The victor for Best Writing for a Variety Series went to The Daily Show, which wasn’t really a surprise, since it’s Jon Stewart’s last season.

“I think that this is going to be the year of “Mad Men” because it’s finished”. It was Janney’s sixth Emmy; she won five times before for “The West Wing”.

Allison Janney was honored at Sunday’s Emmy Awards as best supporting actress in a comedy for her role as a dysfunctional parent in “Mom“.

They include Tatiana Maslany for her multiple clone characters in BBC America’s “Orphan Black”, Anthony Anderson in ABC’s African-American family comedy “black-ish”, and comedian Amy Schumer for her Comedy Central sketch show “Inside Amy Schumer“.

With temperatures nearing 100 degrees in downtown Los Angeles, fans in the bleachers outside the Emmy Awards are resorting to fans – both paper and electric – to keep cool.

Samberg’s musical opening started with a nod to “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” as he emerged from a TV viewing bunker, joking about how many shows have “wives” in the title.

“The Voice” producer Mark Burnett and host Carson Daly snapped selfies with their new statuettes after the show won the outstanding reality competition.

“Olive Kitteridge”, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Elizabeth Strout, almost swept the limited series categories, with six trophies including the top award and lead acting honours for Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins and a supporting award for Bill Murray.
