Square Enix announces ‘Kingdom Hearts HD II.8’ at Tokyo Game Show
Given a placeholder release date of December 31, 2016, Square Enix lists Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 for $59.99. Kingdom Hearts 3 may be the third core game, but it’s actually the ninth game in the series, and directly follows on from Dream Drop Distance.

With all those handheld spinoffs and prequels, Kingdom Hearts has become a little hard to follow.
It’s not known for certain, according to the article, what “Kingdom Hearts II.8” really is.
Kingdom Hearts 3 will be developed using Unreal Engine 4, which will greatly improve the lighting and shading. It will give us more insight into the backstory of the Kingdom Hearts universe, such as how all the worlds were separated.
Reports said that both the partners, Square Enix and Disney had been working on “Kingdom Hearts 2.9” for quite a while.
The bizarrely named collection will contain equally bizarrely named content, starting with Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, the Nintendo 3DS game originally released in 2012.
Hardcore Gamer considered a “Kingdom Hearts” fatigue because of the long waiting game, adding that it’s “turning out to be nothing more than a goose chase with promises of “coming soon” around every turn”.
It will also feature a completely new playable episode, dubbed Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage, which “links to the story of Kingdom Hearts III” and is played from the perspective of Aqua.
According to The Latin Post, Square Enix’ “Kingdom Hearts 3″ would also include San Fransokyo from the “Big Hero 6” franchise.

Unlike the Japanese version of the trailer where it says Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 is releasing in 2016, the North American and European trailers just say it’s “now in development”. The game showcases more than 100 well-known Disney characters including Mickey, Donald, and Goofy as they come across popular “Final Fantasy” icons such as Cloud and Squall.
