Paul Scholes: Louis van Gaal’s big mistake at Manchester United

Van Gaal is short of strikers and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the 19-year-old on the bench against PSV.

“You cannot expect from players of 19, 20 or 21 the same consistency of a Schweinsteiger or Carrick”.

Looking at his BT Sport colleagues Jake Humphreys and Owen Hargreaves, Scholes said: ‘You two probably think I’m mental, but I was encouraged.

“So I am very happy because the first goal was the deciding goal”.

Shaw has been a constant figure in United’s back four this season alongside Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian, and Van Gaal is confident that he can find a replacement for the England global in either Marcos Rojo or Ashley Young.

Van Gaal said the players were “quiet” when he addressed them after the win. “I hope he can play again this season”.

“We were back in the game at 2-1 and looking like maybe getting something“.

His first meaningful contribution was nearly a costly one: Kicking the ball directly to a Liverpool player before being rescued by his defense. There have been times so far this season where Rooney has simply looked terrible on his own up front for Manchester United, a lot of which has been to do with poor service.

However, regardless of who is to blame, Man U have certainly come out of this battle with the upper hand, having managed to keep De Gea and get him to agree to stay with the club for the near future.

“I just think that’s a mistake”.

But his impressive debut goal, Wayne Rooney’s injury and Marouane Fellaini’s ineffectiveness against Liverpool might present an early opportunity to hand him a start. Memphis makes his return to his former club to most likely a warm response; after all he fired home 22 goals to help them win the Dutch league title past year. I like people like him.

“That is the most important thing because it was an important match – for everybody, also with the pressure, for the result against Liverpool – so they need three days to recover”.
