Emmys: Why You Need to See ‘Olive Kitteridge’

Just as impactful in its own way was the success of “Olive Kitteridge“.

It was a winning night for veteran actors such as Frances McDormand, Bill Murray and Richard Jenkins (all of “Olive Kitteridge“), Viola Davis, Jon Hamm, Jeffrey Tambor, Allison Janney, Tony Hale, Regina King and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there”.

HBO’s miniseries premiered nearly a year ago, to modest fanfare, but tonight’s Emmys reminded us how worth watching it is.

The emotional high point was Davis winning for lead actress in a drama, the first time an African-American woman won this category. What’s it about? You bet you should watch it: Based on Elizabeth Strout’s novel, it’s about the stubborn, flinty title character, played by Frances McDormand. “Sometimes that’s enough. Thank you”.

Olive Kitteredge tells the poignantly sweet, acerbically amusing and devastatingly tragic story of a seemingly placid New England town wrought with illicit affairs, crime and tragedy, told through the lens of Olive (Frances McDormand), whose wicked wit and harsh demeanor mask a warm but troubled heart and staunch moral center. And she gave the rare speech that can be quoted entirely in three lines: “My colleagues Jane [Anderson] and Lisa [Cholodenko] have already given the thank-yous that need to be said”. What is a hot topic is how…hotly…she seemed to accept the award. Schumer says the night is about the Internet weighing in on which women look the worst.
