Chitwood told News 6 that Bodden’s phone was shut off Thursday night near Delray Beach, and authorities believed that Bodden was headed to his hometown, Miami, where he was spotted around noon Friday.
Thursday’s shooting at the Carolina Club Apartments on Williamson Boulevard claimed the lives of two Bethune Cookman University coeds.
Chitwood said 27-year-old Bodden had been the victims’ roommates, but they wanted him to leave and offered to refund him $200.
Police say York Bodden was arrested in Miami on Friday. Another roommate, Micah Parham of Romulus, was shot and wounded during the confrontation.
Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said he learned late Saturday afternoon about Bodden’s death by suicide.
Chitwood also said the man had barricaded himself inside the house and refused to come out. Bodden regains custody of the firearm ad racks it because it somehow jammed and he knows what was about to happen and says I’m going to stand here and get killed.
Police said Parham was forced into a closet, then shot nearly a dozen times, including three times in the face and head, and is now in grave condition at Halifax Medical Center.
Carswell, 21, and McDonald, 19, were enrolled at Bethune-Cookman University. The two women, who are college students, have died. While the campus’ Department of Public Safety is working with the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD), it is considered an active investigation and DBPD will release all official information.
This is a very unfortunate incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the families, loved ones and fellow classmates of these students.
