Lynch, Memphis spoils Bowling Green home opener, 44-41
The Tigers pulled some trick plays out of their playbook that helped them in this one. Earlier in the week it was heavily anticipated that the victor of this game would be whoever had the ball last and that proved true, in a sense. The Falcons got the ball first in this game and Johnson and Lewis picked up right where they left off in Maryland last week. Junior quarterback Paxton Lynch completed 29 of 40 passes for 386 yards and three touchdowns (and no interceptions).
Leonard Fournette ran for a career-high 228 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 13 LSU steamrolled 18th-ranked Auburn 45-21 on Saturday. Doroland Dorceus led the Memphis ground attack with 75 yards on 16 carries (and a touchdown). After allowing the Tigers a late lead, Bowling Green clamped down and showed themselves to be the passing juggernaut that we expected of them.
– The Falcons amassed 579 yards of total offense and was penalized ten times for 92 yards. Matt Johnson, however, would again connect with Roger Lewis for a 94 yard strike to retake the 34-27 lead. Johnson ran one in from 23 yards out and then hit Teo Redding with another 9-yard touchdown pass with just three second left in the half to give the Falcons the lead, 27-17. The Tigers have rushed for 10 scores, spreading the wealth around, a big problem for a shaky Bowling Green defense yielding more than six yards per carry. The Tigers have now scored at least 40 points in five straight games, a first for the program. Amid all the offensive fireworks, the game was actually decided by the Memphis defense, which held the Falcons scoreless on their final three possessions of the game.
