Inmarsat and Deutsche Telekom to offer in-flight broadband in Europe

Lufthansa Systems and Lufthansa Technik are additionally planning a long-term global partnership in order to also be able to offer other airlines a modern onboard IT platform (BoardConnect) with broadband Internet access that can be used for a number of different purposes”, explains Lufthansa. Lufthansa will be the first airline in Europe to take advantage of the combined network.

One of the first airlines to trial the service will be Lufthansa, offering satellite-based connectivity in 2016 and flight testing the new solution in 2017. Building on this relationship, Lufthansa will run a flight trial programme of the new LTE/satellite service from 2017 onwards. The first aircraft will be fitted with the new technology in early summer 2016.

“As a groundbreaking innovation we will roll out a powerful terrestrial network based on LTE within the European Aviation Network“.

Inmarsat will combine its satellites with a Deutsche Telekom ground network to provide high-speed Internet to air travelers, according to a statement from Inmarsat today (Sept 21). Each of these sites will have a range of 80km – eight times the standard range of an LTE site – and is capable of transmitting data at the operating altitude and speed of an aircraft. This will be the first aviation connectivity network in Europe powered by both LTE and satellite combined! Deutsche Telekom is present in more than 50 countries and has approximately 228,000 employees worldwide. The satellite will carry an S-band payload for Inmarsat’s European aeronautical service.
