Tropical Storm Ida could strengthen

Tropical Storm Ida was getting stronger in the open Atlantic Monday, but isn’t a threat to any land.

At 5 p.m. Sunday, the center of Ida was located near latitude 18.4 North, longitude 46.3 West. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours or sol followed by slight weakening on Wednesday.

Ida is the ninth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began in June and ends in November.

The same general motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected during the next day or so.

Separately, a tropical depression was lingering in the Atlantic Saturday morning about 815 miles (1,310 kms) east northeast of the Lesser Antilles.

The system is moving toward the northwest near 17 miles per hour .

A ridge of high pressure is forecast to strengthen to the north of Ida, and the storm could become almost stationary in about two days, the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center said the disturbance didn’t show any signs of tropical of subtropical development and cancelled a planned reconnaissance flight into the area.
