Manchester United have confirmed defender Luke Shaw has undergone a second

Djibril Cisse, who broke his leg playing for Liverpool against Blackburn in October 2004, returned to play five-and-a-half months later, while Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey was back playing nine months after his horrific injury against Stoke in 2010.

A United statement on Wednesday read: “Luke underwent surgery for his injury last night and will remain in hospital in Eindhoven to continue his early recovery”.

Smith explained Shaw’s double fracture means he has broken the two main bones – the tibia and fibula – which run parallel down the calf and shin of his right leg. It will be today (Friday) or tomorrow (Saturday) then he will go to a private clinic in Manchester.

As the BBC Sports breakdown shows, the injury to the United defender came at about the fifteenth minute, when Manchester United and PSV Eindhoven were both scoreless.

Sky Sources say that doctors in Holland are satisfied with the second procedure on the double leg fracture. Do you need him? “It’s not an operation but it’s a typical minor operation”.

Shaw left the pitch at the Philips Stadion on a stretcher while receiving oxygen following a late tackle by Hector Moreno.

After a hard first season that saw him suffer due to fitness issues, Shaw was just hitting the kind of form that prompted Manchester United to sign him for £27m from Southampton.

Shaw posted the pictures above on the photo-sharing app and wrote: “I just wanna say a massive thank you to everyone at St Anna hospital for all the care and attention they have given me the last few days”.

“Amazing for me. Big surprise”. That is not good for him.

Van Gaal is well aware of the void Shaw will leave after such an impressive start to the new campaign.

“Wayne is fit to play”, he said.

“For us it is a big loss, because I said in advance it shall be the season of Luke Shaw, and now it is almost finished already”, the Dutchman said.

Koeman, who was manager at the time, felt Van Gaal was too intrusive while technical director at the club.

“I called him last evening”, he said.

Despite positive performances from Anthony Martial since arriving at the club, Manchester United have been handed a boost for Sunday’s game against Southampton with the return of Wayne Rooney. In my memory, Rooney has scored a lot. United, England, van Gaal and Shaw now “have to wait and see how long it takes.”

Ruud Van Nistelrooy believes Martial is the right man to lead United’s line
