Flash Flood Watch issued for Maui County, Big Island

Malia is expected to continue it’s northbound track without presenting a threat to the main Hawaiian Islands. Isolated areas around Phoenix may still see one inch or more of rainfall before it ends later Tuesday.

The rain is courtesy of Tropical Depression 16-E that made landfall early Monday in Mexico after developing Sunday in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Tropical Storm Malia is 1,035 miles west northwest of Kailua-Kona.

An NWS forecast states that this type of rain activity is “capable of producing unsafe flash floods” in areas near creeks or other drainage areas so “residents and motorists living or traveling in flood prone areas should concern themselves with this flood potential…and be prepared to take immediate action should heavy rain and flooding occur or a flash flood warning be issued”.

A flash flood watch in effect for Hawaii Island, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kahoolawe through this afternoon. The weather service expects widespread rain with embedded thunderstorms over all areas, including the coast and coastal waters.

In San Diego, the weather service said that localized flash flooding will be possible, mainly along the foothills and mountain slopes, especially over recent burn scars.

This weekend the county also experienced record high temperatures. There is a 10 percent chance of showers before 11 a.m., but the sun is expected to break through after that.
