The incident which happened in the district of Katni in Madhya Pradesh state in central India, was only discovered when locals spotted the man’s shirt and was pulled out of newly-laid road already dead.

The Katni district police said the 45-year-old was returning home on Friday evening when he fell into the hole. His wife opted to stay back at her parents’ place, while he returned home. The pit was uncovered for some time now.

“Workers must not have noticed him there while filling the road with premix and bitumen, which subsequently led to his death”, said the officer. “Traffic had been restricted on the stretch as the pit occupied more than half of the road”, the investigating officer told TOI.

Angry villagers targeted the road workers and blocked traffic with protests as the crushed body was taken out by the police in presence of senior officials.
