Last night’s 67th Primetime Emmy Awards held a few monumental firsts, some predictable wins and some surprises.

In terms of TV viewership an Emmy win for a show on a network can support leaps in viewership, thereby increasing advertising revenue earned by the channels that depend on commercials to draw profits.

The series was the night’s big victor taking home half of its 24 nominations, the most any series has won in a single year.

Olive Kitteridge, a four-hour mini-series based on an eponymous 2008 novel by Elizabeth Strout, was also in the spotlight as it won multiple honours, including Limited Series, Lead Actor and Actress in a Limited Series or Movie. It was her second Emmy, and in a tearful speech, she said, “If I could say “thank you” a thousand times, it would not be enough”.

It was a long wait for Hamm, who finally won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award, which had eluded him seven times before.

Last year’s Emmys, which aired on NBC, were on a Monday in late August – not against competition like the NFL. One biggie? You get to invite a lot of people to the show-Samberg was given 12 tickets for his hosting debut.

Viola Davis made history when she became the first African-American woman to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series. The creator of the series Jill Soloway, insipred by her transgender father, got an Emmy for directing. Maura’s adult children are played by Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass and Amy Landecker, whose character is either bisexual or gay. Many awards shows, such as the Golden Globes audience and the Grammy Awards, have seen their audience grow in recent years.

Organizers of the Emmy Awards managed to annoy thousands of viewers after creating a montage of spoilers for hit television shows. Jon Hamm, Viola Davis, “Veep” and “Transparent” were among the big winners. Frances McDormand won an acting statuette for her work on the series.
