Allegheny County woman contracts West Nile meningitis

“To reduce mosquito activity and the risk of West Nile virus, the Health Department will spray pesticide from trucks in parts of Queens and Brooklyn”, says the DOH.

The DOH sometimes announces sprayings only a day or two in advance, so keep your eye on the summer spray schedule (or Patch!) for the latest.

This marks the first human case in Allegheny County this year. Much of the testing is conducted in areas near the Rio Grande because those are the areas that tend to flood and have more standing water, officials said.

There have been 10 reported cases of human infection in New Jersey in 2015 and two deaths, a 65-year old male in Passaic County and a 57-year female in Monmouth County. Flu-like symptoms may include fever, headache, body aches, skin rashes and swollen lymph glands.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) has partnered with the mother of a woman who has died due to West Nile virus in order to increase awareness about the virus.

The mosquito borne virus is not restricted to rural areas, and not all mosquitoes carry the disease. Be sure to follow product directions carefully and consult with your child’s doctor prior to using on children.
