Liverpool’s Benteke to undergo scan after hamstring injury

Liverpool are waiting to find out the extent of Christian Benteke’s hamstring injury, Gary McAllister revealed on Tuesday.

The Belgium striker was substituted at half-time of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Norwich City and will miss tomorrow’s Capital One Cup tie with League Two Carlisle United.

“Christian will have an MRI scan today”, confirmed the first-team coach Gary McAllister.

“Everybody [else] is good”.

His absence opens up the prospect of Danny Ings being given a start after his excellent performance at the weekend, when he scored his first Liverpool goal and provided Brendan Rodgers’ side with an energy and presence that they had been lacking.

Benteke, a £32.5 million summer signing, faces a race against time to be available for Saturday’s visit of former side Aston Villa. I think if you’d seen him every day since he’s arrived here in the training ground, if there’s anybody that deserves a goal it’s Danny.

“It wasn’t a fluke, it’s by pure hard work”.

Daniel Sturridge played for 63 minutes against Norwich on his return following hip surgery and McAllister acknowledged that the England striker’s workload must be managed carefully. Jordan Henderson has come through his operation fine’. “He’s a quality player and brings something a little bit different”.

“We’re picking from almost a full squad [for Carlisle]”.

“The medical guys are aware of Daniel’s situation and over the season, he’s a player they’ve got to really look after”.
