Search for missing hiker in Haywood Co. enters second day

According to Warren, a group of people searching for Hays called out to her while looking in the area and Hays responded back to them at 5:45 p.m.

The rescue was expected to take several hours because Hays was located about four miles from the trailhead.

As of 5 a.m. on Tuesday emergency crews tell News Channel 11 they have successfully rescued Julie Hays, the Washington County, Tennessee assistant district attorney.

She was reported missing Saturday night in the Shining Rock Wilderness area. “Heavy fog made for limited visibility in the rugged terrain”.

The search began after midnight Sunday morning, and has continued round the clock since, but there have been no sightings. Heidi Warren with the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office.

A hiker who had been missing for the past two days has been found, according to sheriff’s office officials. A note left at her vehicle stated she began her hike at 10 a.m, the release said.

Several searchers from Henderson County Rescue Squad, Buncombe County Rescue Squad, Asheville Fire Department, Asheville Police Department, and a helicopter from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol have tried to find her.

Both Craig Hays and searchers are anxious Julie Ann Hays was dressed and prepared only for a day trip, wearing a short sleeve shirt, and having packed only a light lunch.
