Florida’s defense frustrates Kentucky in 14-9 victory

“The stadium was full and it’s not even basketball season, right?”

“It’s always fun to see those first-year guys in their first real hostile environment”, McElwain said.

So maybe that last item doesn’t fit with the rest, but among Kentucky fans, it’s one they’re familiar with when the annual meeting with Florida arrives. This is Kentucky where they don’t promote their basketball team at just any ol’ football game.

They learned more about themselves – and they came away with the victory.

Kentucky looks to start the season with three straight wins for the first time since 2010 and end a long losing streak against Florida when it hosts the Gators for an SEC battle Saturday. He also has an interception and a fumble.

He was far from sensational, though, throwing for 125 yards on 13 completions in 25 attempts. In rushing, Kelvin Taylor had 55 yards and a touchdown in 16 carries while Jordan Cronkrite added 47 yards in nine runs.

“So, they played very good and very disruptive defensively, caused us a lot of problems all night”.

Senior offensive guard Trip Thurman said he had no problem with McElwain’s sideline explosion. If either player gets a “hot hand”, then that player will likely stay in.

“He left some bad big plays on the field”. We’ll learn from it. That’s why we play the game.

“I do understand coaching and I understand the moment”. Grier might have already won that job. “The defense obviously stepped up and played really good….” He completed only eight of 24 passes for 124 yards was intercepted twice and sacked six times.

Meanwhile, Kentucky has kept playing basketball.

“We know these are hard-fought games”. But, the important thing is that we make more than them. – United Kingdom was outgained 285 yards to 241.

UK’s Stanley “Boom” Williams was the game’s top rusher. A consensus five-star recruit, he was deemed Florida’s “quarterback of the future” when he signed. He got things going early with a 53-yard interception return leading to Grier’s 1-yard run and Florida held firm after Taylor’s 3-yard TD made it 14-3 in the third quarter.

But he’s not the only Gators freshman to do in the Vols, whose recent stretch of struggles against Florida can be attributed, in part, to their inability to capitalize on offenses entrusted to an inexperienced quarterback.

Grier started and finished the game. South Florida (1-2) also had its share of miscues – including two turnovers, a dropped potential touchdown pass, a holding call that wiped out a touchdown run, and a personal foul penalty that erased a fourth-quarter first down when the score was 28-17. Florida’s defense proved to be the best unit on the field, and it held the day as the Kentucky defense found its footing against UF’s attack.
