UCF dismisses running back William Stanback from team

On the heels of what has become a disappointing last two season for All-AAC running back Will Stanback, the UCF Knights have announced the junior will not be returning to the team.

The Knights will try to get their first win of the season when they travel to play the South Carolina Gamecocks this Saturday at Noon.

O’Leary addressed reporters for about a minute after practice but declined to offer further details as to the events that led to Stanback’s removal.

Update: According to ESPN’s Joe Schad, Stanback failed multiple drug tests for marijuana. He rushed for 697 yards and 10 touchdowns on 189 carries in 10 games, averaging 3.7 yards per carry.

Stanback had clearly fallen out of favor with his coaches, only carrying the ball 12 times for 11 yards in 2015. The Knights have just 256 yards rushing on 101 carries this season, with freshman Taj McGowan leading the way with 35 carries for 111 yards.

The circumstances surrounding his dismissal were not specified.

A projected starter in the preseason, Stanback came off the bench in UCF’s season-opening loss to Florida global , and played sparingly in Week 2 at Stanford.
