Once onto the run, Reid was moving very well as she battled it out with a group vying for a top 10 finish.

Hewitt has claimed the overall silver medal in the world championship series after finishing fourth at the grand final in Chicago.

When she caught her breath, Jorgensen thanked her coach for this remarkable run.

“I’m just Gwen, just an ordinary person in my mind”, she said. Carolina Routier (ESP) set out with intention at the Grand Final, making sure to set the tone of the day, which was all about pushing max watts in the hunt for the World Championship podium.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do next”, she said, adding that she will probably focus most on improving her bike in the offseason. Right behind Jorgensen in the standings are two USA women.

Stanford was “delighted” with her efforts in Chicago, where she led during the run only for Jorgenson to produce the decisive burst. “Last year [in Chicago] I came off the bike nearly a minute or more off the leaders, so I had that gap to close and I really used the crowd and the people there to motivate me and get me across the finish line”. “I did watch the [London Olympic track and field] races on TV, but even that was kind of hard, just wishing it. I felt like I deserved, or I could have been on the starting line”. “Non was setting the pace but we knew Gwen had an extra gear so we were just waiting for her to go.

“I’ll have a month off in October and start slowly building up from there”.

She’s won two career World Triathlon Series races, in Stockholm in 2014 and 2015, events that Jorgensen skipped.
