China Pres. Starts U.S. Visit

The three-day Seattle leg of the trip includes a visit to the Microsoft campus, and a meeting with top business leaders.

And Xi also reassured that China is moving steadily toward more sustainable growth: “Like an arrow shot that can not be brought back, we will forge ahead against all odds to meet our goals of reform”.

Schultz will be part of a roundtable Wednesday among 15 US and 15 Chinese CEOs, and Xi is expected to make an appearance.

But at the same time, Fan Jishe with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences says he expects the USA side to be more direct when it comes to dealing with China.

And many are concerned that Beijing does not have a firm hand on the sudden downturn of its economy – the world’s second largest – which has fueled turmoil in global financial markets. The expert said that both Obama and Xi will address the matter in a comprehensive manner, adding that China’s security chief, Meng Jianzhu, had traveled to the USA a few days earlier to discuss the issue with U.S. officials.

“The Chinese government does not engage in theft of commercial secrets in any form, nor does it encourage or support Chinese companies to engage in such practices in any way”, he said.

“China is in a race to the bottom with North Korea for the title of the world’s worst violators of human rights”, said Rep. Christopher Smith, a Republican from New Jersey.

The Wall Street Journal submitted its questions to China’s foreign ministry and officials “pulled together facts and research for the answers”, the paper said, before Xi “revised and reviewed them”.

A host of organisations from universities to businesses to rights groups would be affected should the draft law requiring them to register and report to security officials enter into force.

Rein says the business environment for USA tech companies in China is the worst he’s seen in 20 years, and the Obama administration has done little to improve the situation.

The Chinese president will be in New York from September 26 to 28 for a series of summits and meetings marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations.
