Head coach George O’Leary said he informed junior running back Will Stanback Tuesday morning that he was dismissed from the football team.

Jon Croft Hollingsworth’s school-record 55-yard field goal propelled Furman University to a stunning 16-15 win over the University of Central Florida.

Stanback’s dismissal was explained with the standard line about team rules violations. This fall in production comes on the heels of a 697 yard, 10 touchdown season past year . He did deal with several injuries last season, but was ready for a fresh start behind a seasoned offensive line. Stanback was the team’s leading rusher in 2014.

“I had to deal with some injuries previous year “.

Stanback appeared in just two games for the Knights, getting 12 carries for 11 yards.

O’Leary addressed reporters for about a minute after practice but declined to offer further details as to the events that led to Stanback’s removal.

The Knights will move forward with freshmen Taj McGowan (35 carries for 111 yards this season) and C.J. Jones (seven carries, 51 yards) in the backfield – and not much help around them.
