Sean White named starting quarterback at Auburn

Coach Gus Malzahn said Tuesday he is benching a struggling Jeremy Johnson and switching to Sean White starting with Saturday night’s game against Mississippi State. “You do what you feel like is best for the situation”. Auburn was just dominated by Leonard Fournette to the tune of 228 yards and three touchdowns and Johnson was benched in favor of Sean White. This season, Smith has two receptions for 11 yards.

“Sean White is a guy that has got a lot of reps”. “I feel like [White] needs a shot right now”.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pounder started out the season fourth on the depth chart, dealing with a leg injury, he’s slowly becoming a larger piece of Auburn’s offense game plan. Lawson missed the past two games with a right hip injury sustained in the first half of the opener with Louisville.

But Johnson never let his place on the depth chart dictate his intensity, or focus. He’s got that little air of confidence that quarterback have.

White ran a spread-style, pass-oriented offense in high school, completing 61 percent of his passes for 2,656 yards and 30 touchdowns as a senior.

Changing quarterbacks won’t immediately solve Auburn’s problems, of course.

He missed last season recovering from knee surgery.

White, a 6-foot, 200-pound quarterback, was ranked as the No. 8 pro-style quarterback recruit in the country in the class of 2014, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

There is still time for Auburn to turn things around, and there’s still time for Johnson to turn around his game too. That’s what is best for the offense going into Mississippi State.
