NIU Huskies take big step forward at Ohio State

Meriam-Webster dictionary defines “discombobulate” as the act of being upset or confused.

It was a performance for the ages by the Northern Illinois defense. Give them credit. But Ohio State’s offense was terrible throughout the game and will have to improve soon or there will be more unexpectedly close games – or worse – in the future.

“That’s as good of a football team as we’ll play”, Hare said.

“I got the look I wanted outside”, Hare said.

And Meyer might be low-balling it.

Junior running back Joel Bouagnon had 21 carries for 78 yards for the Huskies, who had 110 rushing yards as a team.

Ohio State remains No. 1, meaning this is the first time the Big Ten has had the top two teams since No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Michigan played at the end of the 2006 regular season. The Buckeyes led only 17-0 through three quarters.

The Buckeye offense was reeling all day long and even prompted a quarterback change. “He’s one of the best players in the country,”Meyer said”. Tranquill is the sixth player lost for the season, including the notable loss of starting quarterback Malik Zaire. There is no set thing saying that we’re a two-quarterback system — we’re not. However this time around was different, Cardale struggled mightily on Saturday, racking up a measly total of 36 yards and throwing the two interceptions that were the ultimate factor in the decision to bench him. Barrett completed 11 of 19 passes for 97 yards.

Meyer said he stuck with Barrett because: “We felt like he gave us the best chance to move the ball down the field.”. Part of the reason why the Buckeyes had so many three-and-outs was because they averaged seven yards to go on third down (median yards to go was five) due to poor first and second down efficiency. The more disruptive he is, the easier it his for his teammates to make plays. Yes, Hawaii was 127th in offensive S&P+, but Northern Illinois was actually 19th.

It was a weird day for Ohio State.

Jack Willoughby, who hit two short field goals, appears to be settling in as the No. 1 kicker.

Meyer & Co. are now being pressed for time to come up with answers.

The Buckeyes (3-0) committed five turnovers in all.

But when asked about the quarterback position, Meyer was unsure.

Next week against Western Michigan, Meyer needs to pick a quarterback and let him have a leash long enough that he can build some confidence, and not have to worry about making a mistake.

It seems unfathomable that OSU would be just 2-of-15 on third and fourth down conversions and fail to score a touchdown on three trips inside the red zone against NIU – the class of a Mid-American Conference that has made a very good impression in the non-conference season, but a team that had given up 866 yards and 56 points in its first two games.

Jones is a threatening player in the open field: He ran for 296 yards on 72 carries (4.1 yards per rush, 29.6 yards per game), scoring a lone touchdown on the ground last season.

“It’s just really frustrating, knowing what we’re capable of and what we can do to teams and we’re just not playing up to that level”, offensive tackle Taylor Decker said.

The Buckeyes also need to find a way to unleash Ezekiel Elliott.

The offense has scored at least 43 points in three straight games for the first time.

The problem is, it hasnt found itself.
