Hingis and Mirza only began playing as a team in March, and now they’ve won a second Grand Slam trophy in a row, after Wimbledon in July. In fact, she won five. The Indian tennis firebrand, Sania Mirza along with her grand slam partner and former world champion Martina Hingis together won their second Grand Slam title at the US Open Women’s Doubles.
“Mirza is now the top-ranked doubles” player, while her partner Hingis is second. Of those 10, two came with Paes only when they won Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2003.
Paes was undoubtedly the star of the match today, with a dominating court presence, which belied his age.
She broke Halep’s serve to clinch the win, burying her face in her hands in stunned joy after hitting her 23rd victor on match point.
The top-ranked Djokovic saved his first eight break points of the set but couldn’t do it one more time. But the roars for his opponent didn’t rattle Djokovic much, and he also recovered quickly from a scary fall early in the first set that left him with bloody scrapes on his right forearm, hand and knee.
That Paes has been able to take this for so many ye…
Kazakshtan’s Shvedova and Australia’s Dellacqua struggled to hold serve, making it too easy for Sania and Hingis. “Congrats to Martina Hingis and Leander Paes on their mixed doubles victory”. We were on for like two hours practising for a final. Some glittering tennis ensued.
Sania: In 2013 I won five tournaments and I thought okay, it is tough to better this; and you go in 2014 and I win a Slam; and then you come here [2015]. This time, on Hingis’ serve, the pair consolidated the service break for 5-2. However, with Hingis serving for the championship, the fourth seeds broke back in the next game for 3-5. But a double fault gifted Sania-Martina match point in the very next game. We both play well, stay calm and we both thrive under that pressure. He went down the middle, exposing the chinks and lack of team play on the other side of the court, to make it 6-6.

The pair will face unseeded American combine of Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sam Querrey in the summit clash. But Hingis and Paes took the mini-break back on Mattek-Sands serve at the next opportunity. Paes followed it up with a victor down the middle, which was his forte for the day, and a lunge at the net finished the match.
