Day falls short in bid for magical 59 at BMW Championship

After hitting a measly birdie on the final hole to end his first round, Day decided to go out in style after 36 holes with an eagle that pushed his score to 18 under and gave him a five-shot lead heading into Saturday.

Spieth, who played in the same group as Day, shot a 5-under 66 Friday and is tied with Kevin Na at 11-under for the tournament, seven shots off the pace.

His only challenger was rookie tour player Daniel Berger, who grabbed a share of the lead when he got hot early on the back nine. He has two eagles, 16 birdies, 16 pars and just two bogeys over the first two days. If he holes it, he’ll become the seventh man to shoot a 59 on the PGA Tour. I’m just trying to push forward as much as possible. Instead, he hit a low pitch that skidded to a stop 10 feet from the hole and narrowly missed and settled for a 61.

As for how Day planned to attack his first shot of the day on Friday? “Yeah, I don’t mind it. Obviously it’s not the position I want to be in, but it’s a nice little change”.

Another day, another red-hot round for Jason Day at the BMW Championship.

To put that in perspective, the distance between Day and McIlroy in the rankings on July 5 (7.0171 points) is greater than the margin from the last-ranked player today – 1,677th-ranked Champions Tour player Paul Goydos – to the current No. 8 spot.

“I feel like I should be paying to come watch some of this”, said Spieth, tied for fifth at 11 under.

Day, seeking a fourth win in six starts, returned to Conway Farms Golf Club after overnight thunderstorms with a 44-yard chip shot from deep rough standing between him and a magical 59. Spieth chipped in for birdie on No. 3, and Day matched it with a 5-foot birdie. “I’ve tried to work on it pretty hard, but just haven’t really found a right rhythm”.

With two days remaining in the tournament, the secondary market ticket prices for the BMW Championship are on the rise towards the tournament’s finish.

“I can not apologize enough for the distraction this has caused my family, teammates, this incredible organization and, of course, our fans”, Kane said.

“I stopped (counting) at six and it kept going for a while which was good…I was waiting for a round like this where everything clicks together”.

Day holed out from 79 yards in a bunker for eagle on the first hole.

Spieth’s other playing partner was Rickie Fowler, who won the second leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs at the Deutsche Bank Championship.

“I’m going to have to go really low over the weekend to have a chance”, he said.
